Program overview RJ McLeod was appointed Balance of Plant Principal Contractor by Boralex for the construction of Limekiln Wind Farm, located south of Reay village in Caithness on the north coast of Scotland. This renewable energy development now connects 24 wind turbines to the grid, with a combined capacity of 108MW. Challenge The main challenges were due to the tight program whilst managing the simultaneous delivery and erection of turbines through an active construction site – over challenging terrain and in a remote location. Ground conditions, particularly at several turbine locations where excavations required dewatering, were extremely demanding. Overcoming these issues required close attention to the co-ordination of operations and control of site logistics to ensure a safe site and operations.
Solution Our approach relied on experienced supervision, well-equipped site teams, and a culture of proactive problem‑solving. Our supervisors were highly motivated and supported by skilled plant operators with the equipment needed to maintain pace and safety. The site team implemented a practical and efficient earthworks strategy to manage earthworks stability in difficult ground conditions. Daily co-ordination meetings under the leadership of our management team ensured that all contractors and stakeholders worked together effectively to maintain access, manage interface points and support consistent and safe progress on the project and program.
Outcome The shared dedication and commitment of our management team, workforce, client and stakeholders on a technically complex and logistically challenging project were evident. We engaged with, and became part of, the local community – providing social value and economic stimulus to the local area and beyond. The result was a safely constructed wind farm delivered on time and to budget, to a high standard, ready to contribute clean, renewable energy to the national grid.
